2010 Performances Mahasti:
Mahasti Dance Company is a professional belly dance troupe that combines Cabaret, folkloric, gothic, Chinese martial arts, Tribal Fusion and American Tribal Style Belly Dance to create a style uniquely their own. Family friendly, energetic and fun, Mahasti Dance Company is a powerful expression of women coming together to connect and celebrate through dance. 2009 Musical Entertainment 11am Mother Tongue MotherTongue, with special guest performers Sarah Stockwell Arthen and Andras Corban Arthen. MotherTongue is the ritual performance group of the EarthSpirit Community. (Recordings available at www.cdbaby.com) 12pm Jeff Martell Born some thousand years ago, Jeff has spent the intervening centuries perfecting the lost arts of acoustic music. Performing in a variety of venues throughout the east, Jeff has demonstrated time and time again the amazing breadth and scope of his musical abilities. He is at home with Bluegrass flat picking, blues, reggae , and rock and roll as well as traditional and modern folk. Jeff weaves a spell around his audience with driving guitar, blistering harmonica and a voice that can only be described as heart stopping. In this age of cookie cutter clones and MTV culture, it is truly refreshing to hear an original voice. Jeff also writes great songs and is not afraid to pick on a few sacred cows.. You can find out more about his music at www.jeffmartell.net 3 pm Hornworm Local Band Hornworm perforems for the first time at WMPPD! 5pm Belly Dancing with Lauren Grover Lauren Grover -aka- Ghazalah al-Badriyyah Henna Artist, Teacher, Dancer Lauren has been a professional henna artist since 1993. She was first introduced to henna in the SCA, a medieval history recreation society, and her focus has been on henna's history and traditions ever since. In 2006, Lady Ghazalah al-Badriyyah (as Lauren is known in the Society) was inducted into the Order of the Maunche, the East Kingdom's Order of High Merit for the Arts, for her dedication to researching and teaching henna's origins. Lauren is also an avid crafter and has been known to finish the embroidery on a dress while waiting for the paint to dry on an illuminated manuscript left on the stove where her homemade bread is rising. Other interests include making temari balls, reading speculative fiction and fantasy, knitting, and sleep. Lauren is also in charge of making the iced Persian sekanjabins and sharbats sold at events. Shenandoah:Hoop Dancing Performance 10-15 min performances through out the day! Shenandoah has been hoop dancing since 2001, performing, teaching and sharing this whirling world . Shen grew up in Western Mass with extensive traveling, brought on by her love of exploration, adventure and learning. She teaches all ages of people to hoop through various after-school programs, retreats, celebrations, festivals and many more. Shen has taught classes at the Shelburne Falls Yoga Studio, Dance Northampton, The Body Shop and the Energy Park in Greenfield, as well as many in-school classes from elementary to college. An established, professional hoop dancer, Shenandoah is always learning more in the never ending circle of possibilities that surrounds everyone. She has taught at Dance New England, Daughters of the Earth, Boston School of Art, Community Action Teachers Enrichment Day, The Community Health Center in Middletown CT. Schools in Holyoak, Deerfield, Greenfield, Sunderland, Shelburne, Orange and East Longmeadow.
